The art of social media is to start a worthwhile conversation. The beauty of social media, for financial advisers at least, is that those conversations may turn into meaningful, long-lasting and profitable relationships.

  • If you do it, do it right. It’s better to avoid social media, than to start something you can’t maintain. Think carefully about the commitment needed. Would it be once a week or daily?
  • Write professionally. Online, everyone sees you all the time. Think about your profile, stay professional, and remember that not everyone may read what you’ve written ‘the same way you wrote it’.
  • Check your writing. Every tweet or post conveys an impression of you as a person and gives people an idea about your business. Spell-check. Make sure what you’ve written makes sense.
  • Make a great contribution. You never know who’s reading what you’re writing. Make sure everything you post is worth reading.
  • Make it a two-way street. Talk to people, have conversations, ‘follow’ a wide audience.
  • Share the good news. If you’re investing energy in raising your profile, don’t hide the fact. Add your social media handles to letterheads, comp slips, your website – everywhere.
